Excerpt from liner notes:
On the subject of what's cool
for kids and cool kids, few
would argue that Annie Ross
was one of the originals. This
notion has been well supported
through the years by the at
least partially autobiographical
content of the story told in
her famous lyric set to the
tune of Wardell Gray's "Twisted."
For what may be more visceral
evidence one should consult
her "swinging Scots"
routine in one of the later
"Our Gang" comedies
or perhaps her short but tuneful
turn in "Presenting Lily
Mars" starring Judy Garland.
It also helps to accrue points
in one's "hip account"
to have been the toast of the
London and Paris theater and
music scene when still in their
early twenties. I think she
is one of the few people who
can boast of being met at Newark
Airport for her first trip to
New York by a welcoming party
that included Charlie Parker
and Miles Davis. Though she
is every bit the worldly adult
whose singing speaks to "grown
ups" wherever she appears,
she will always retain elements
of that cool kid who was a "wizard
at three" both on and off
stage.
